Nov 10 : A new study has found that interferon does not slow or stop the progression of chronic hepatitis C and advanced liver disease in patients who haven’t responded to earlier attempts to get rid of the disease.

Interferons (IFNs) are natural proteins produced by the cells of the immune system of most vertebrates in response to challenges by foreign agents such as viruses, bacteria, parasites and tumor cells. Interferons belong to the large class of glycoproteins known as cytokines. They assist the immune response by inhibiting viral replication within other cells of the body.

In a trial conducted by the Saint Louis University School of Medicine, patients who were treated with interferon did experience a noteworthy decrease in viral levels and liver inflammation, but the trial unequivocally showed that treatment with long-term pegylated interferon
